General Special Education Terminology

Special education provides extra help and support for students with disabilities so they can succeed in school. This support is tailored to each child’s unique needs through services like speech therapy, counseling, or specialized instruction. Lean on Me advocates can help you understand these services and how they apply to your child.

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written plan developed by a team that outlines the special education services your child will receive. It includes your child’s strengths, needs, goals, and the support they’ll get in school. Lean on Me can guide you through the IEP process to make sure your child’s plan meets their needs.

ARD stands for Admission, Review, and Dismissal. It’s a meeting where parents, teachers, and school staff create or update your child’s IEP. Lean on Me advocates can attend ARD meetings with you to ensure your voice is heard and your child’s rights are protected.

FAPE stands for Free Appropriate Public Education. It means your child has the right to a free education that meets their needs, just like any other student. Lean on Me works to ensure schools provide the services your child is entitled to under the law.

LRE stands for Least Restrictive Environment. It means your child should be in a classroom with their peers as much as possible while still getting the support they need. Lean on Me helps families navigate placement options to find the best fit for their child.

Advocacy and Parental Support

You can request an evaluation in writing from your child’s school. This evaluation will determine if your child qualifies for special education services. Lean on Me can help you write the request and follow up with the school.

If the school says your child doesn’t qualify for services, you have the right to challenge that decision. Lean on Me can help you navigate this process, including requesting a second opinion.

Gather any documents or information about your child’s needs, such as medical records or teacher notes. Know what you’d like to discuss, and consider bringing a trusted advocate. Lean on Me can attend ARD meetings with you and help you advocate for the services your child deserves.

An advocate supports you by helping you understand your rights, preparing for meetings, and ensuring your child gets the services they need. Lean on Me’s advocates are experienced in Texas special education law and can stand by your side throughout the process.

You have the right to participate in all decisions about your child’s education, review records, ask questions, and disagree with decisions.

Be prepared, ask questions, take notes, and don’t be afraid to speak up. You know your child best, and your input is essential.
